Remember, the companies tell you only about those features of their products, they want you to know about. A layman is not technically adept to go into the details of the digital cameras. A flashy marketing campaign is enough to allure the customers and sell the products. But you can easily get the best with in your budget by just knowing a few basic essentials for shopping a digital camera. This basic knowledge enables you to purchase the right camera, according to your choice.
The first thing to look out while shopping around for a digital camera is the number of mega pixels. You must have come across the advertisements boasting well on the more mega pixels of their digital cameras as compared to any other camera. Mega pixels are actually one million pixels. Pixels are small squares that form a picture on a camera screen. All the pixels have a particular color assigned to them. The pixels are building block of the picture.
Commonly, people presume that the larger is the number of mega pixels in a digital camera, the clearer the image is. This is a wrong notion. The pixels make a picture big or small. A 10,000 MP camera will not give you clearer image than an 8000 MP camera. But it will yield a larger image. So while purchasing the camera, be sure that you know how much pixels you want in your digital camera.
The sensors in your digital camera determine its efficiency. While you shop around for your digital camera, always pay attention to the types of sensors employed in it. Sensors are used to capture the image before transferring it to the main memory of the camera. This makes the camera ready to capture further images instantly.
Basically, you have two types of sensors. They are CCD and CMOS. The CCD is Charged Couple Device. It is found in expensive cameras. This sensor gives a great image quality. The other one i.e. Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor does not provide a good image quality. This sensor is mostly found in the cheaper cameras. If you are not a professional photographer, you can afford to buy some cheaper cameras with CMOS sensors.
The selection of a digital camera largely depends on the type of photography you like to do. The market is flooded with different varieties of digital cameras for various purposes. If you are inclined towards wild life photography, look for a camera with Center-Weighted metering. Center weighted metering is a feature by which the light reflected by the object is measured accurately with in the digital camera. The camera is focused at the center of the object.
If you are fond of nature photography, a wide angle lens and memory exposure lock is a must for you. Memory exposure is responsible for the depth of a photograph. The wide angle lens brings the depth visible. Always make sure that you carry a light camera if you are mountaineering or going for an adventure trip.By: Dan Feildman

Now you can compose and view the exact picture you’re going to take, using your camera’s full liquid crystal display
(LCD) screen. Review the picture an instant after pressing the shutter. If your computer is nearby, you can upload it seconds later, view a super-large version on your display, crop, enhance, and then make your own sparkling full-color print — all within minutes!
When you go digital, you never need to buy film or wait while your photos are processed in a lab. You decide which images to print and how large to make them. You can display your digital photographic work framed on your wall or displayed proudly over your fireplace. You can make wallet-size photos, send copies to friends in e-mail, or create an online gallery that can be viewed by relatives and colleagues over the Web.
Digital photography gives you the power to take pictures on a whim, or to create careful professional quality work that others might be willing to pay for. The choices are all yours, and digital photography puts all the power in your hands. All you need is a little information on how to choose and use your tools, and how to put them to work. The most exciting thing is how rapidly the technology is changing to bring you new capabilities and features that you can use to improve your pictures.
Taking pictures with a digital camera:
Some differences in technique are required, as the digital image data is captured in a manner that is different from a film camera. Most digital cameras have a shutter that will make settings of focus and contrast when the shutter button is half-way down, and this process may add a delay to the time before the shutter operates.
When looking through a viewer, it is desirable to have a digital screen in the eyepiece viewer. One reason this is important is to ensure that certain types of scenes will retain the color elements correctly. U should be aware that many digital cameras can do poorly with scenes such as sunrises if they point the camera at the foreground slightly below the horizon and in line with the sun before pressing the shutter. This may result in an image that shows none of the color or brightness of the sky. However, if you use the shutter button to pre-focus (and pre-contrast) on the sky, and hold the shutter button half-way down as your re-direct the camera toward the preferred framing direction, you will see if the colorful features in the sky will be retained in the picture.
Generally speaking, a digital camera will use a shutter speed that is faster than a film camera, which relieves the user from having to steady the digital camera as much to avoid blurred pictures. Also, many digital cameras have an auto exposure feature that tends to make a setting of fast shutter and fast f-stop. Thus, an amateur photographer can do a respectable job with telephoto photography, where the narrow-angle view may be the only manual adjustment needed for point-and-shoot pictures.
Read the instruction manual for the camera to set up this feature. It may require that you press the shutter button halfway and hold it for a second or longer for this feature to become operational prior to operating the shutter.
Some of the better digital cameras do can an excellent job of taking close-ups, as their focus range may include four inches to infinity.
With the digital viewer on the back of the camera, you can have some assurance that a satisfactory photo has been obtained. However, it has limited resolution and limited ability to show a good display in sunlight. You can delete images from the flash card that you don’t want and free up memory for additional frames to be shot on the same flash card.
For most purposes, u will be satisfied with images in the JPG format. With a 2 Mpixel camera, each frame will require about 0.5 MB of file space. Thus a 32 MB flash card will serve to retain up to 64 image frames.
Why still use your old “film” camera when you can go Digital?

How Do Digital Cameras Differ From Film Or SLR Cameras?
The digital camera has two things: a built-in computer, and electronic recorded images. They have not entirely replaced the conventional camera, though, as film represents the highest quality of pictures.
The early digital cameras were used to store images on memory devices within the camera, then transferring the images to the computer with the help of cables. Today, most digital camera makers provide reusable and removable storage devices, such as SmartMedia cards, CompactFlash, cards and Memory Sticks. Some other removable storage devices include the floppy disks, hard disks, or micro-drives, writeable CDs and DVDs. This has considerably enhanced the volume of visual data that can be stored.
A digital camera uses light converted into electrical charges, instead of film, to take pictures. It focuses this light through a lens or a series of lenses onto a sensor, which records the image electronically. The sensor used the most is employed by a CCD (charge coupled device) while others use a CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor).
If a CCD is used to transport the charge, its sensors create a high-quality, low-noise image, while the CMOS are more susceptible to noise while traditionally using less power. The CCDs consume as much as 100 times more power than that of a CMOS yet have been mass-produced for a longer time. They have a higher number of higher quality pixels yet both play the same role – they turn light into electricity.
What every photographer is looking for is clarity and high detail, with very little blurriness or a grainy look. This has to do with the resolution of the camera, which refers to the amount of detail the camera can capture. Hewlett Packard estimates that a 35mm film is about 20 million pixels, considered a very high-resolution picture – 1216×912, or 2 million total pixels, is a photo lab quality for the 4×5 picture.
To break it down even more, a 1 megapixel digital camera will produce images that are good for e-mailing or posting on the Web because their resolution is low. The images taken from a 2-megapixel camera are suitable for 4×5 inch prints while those taken from a 4-megapixel camera can produce 16×20 inch prints.
The digital cameras use four kinds of lenses. These are: fixed-focus, fixed-zoom lenses; optical-zoom lenses with automatic focus; digital-zoom lenses, and replaceable lens systems. The fixed focus and fixed zoom lenses are used in inexpensive cameras while the optical zoom lenses have both wide and telephoto options. The aperture and shutter speed are used to control the amount of light that reaches the sensor.
The aperture setting, or the size of the opening in the camera, is automatic in most digital cameras but a few allow manual adjustment. This is because certain professionals or amateurs want more control over the final image. The shutter speed is the time amount that passes through the aperture. This can be set electronically, which is different than using film in the conventional 35mm cameras. The digital camera has a digital shutter, rather than a mechanical shutter.
Overall, the digital camera and the traditional film camera have the same principals. The both have a viewfinder for aiming the camera, the lens for focusing, the ability to store several images and remove them later on, with a compact format for everything’s storage.
Two different systems yet slightly the same – the conventional camera captured images with light-sensitive film to store them after chemical development, while the digital camera used memory storage and advanced image sensor technology, capturing images to store them in digital format that is instantly available instead of having to wait. Yet the digital camera is more environmentally friendly, keeping up with the issues of the world while photographing these issues at the moment they occur.
